Chemical shows at Vejrostova Primary School captivated hundreds of children

As part of our efforts to popularize chemistry, we organized two chemical shows at Vejrostova Primary School in Brno, attended by approximately 300 pupils from grades 3 to 5. The program was prepared by Tomáš Opravil, recipient of the South Moravian Region Award for the popularization of science, and Kateřina Provazníková, a student of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, who introduced chemistry to the children in a fun and interactive way.

When we asked the children what they enjoyed the most, their answer was unanimous: “Everything!” From explosive reactions and colorful experiments to a rocket launch, the show brought plenty of laughter, amazement, and excitement.
Shouts of “Wow!” and “Amazing!” could often be heard from the crowd as the experiments quite literally came to life before their eyes.
The children also agreed that they would welcome this kind of enrichment in their classes more often and were already looking forward to trying similar experiments themselves one day.

According to the teachers, the event significantly enriched their teaching as well: “We do try to carry out experiments with the children in class, but we simply don’t have the conditions or equipment for a show like this. For the children, it’s a huge experience. And the lecturer is a real showman – he presents chemistry in a way that is truly engaging for them. If it were just dry explanation, it definitely wouldn’t have the same effect. We really appreciate these activities from the university, as they show children how diverse the world around them is and what opportunities they may have in the future,” said Olga Novotná, a primary school teacher at Vejrostova Primary School.

With a smile, she added: “I’ve always thought about trying a rocket experiment with the children – it’s really impressive! But when sending photos, I did think it would be better to remind parents not to let their children try some of these experiments at home on their own.”

The chemical shows are part of the faculty’s broader effort to make science accessible to children and to inspire them to explore the fascinating world of chemistry.
