FCH BUT hosted the regional final of the Looking for the Best Young Chemist of the Czech Republic competition
The Faculty of Chemistry became the venue for the announcement of the winners of the regional final of the nationwide competition Looking for the Best Young Chemist of the Czech Republic, which encourages primary school pupils’ interest in chemistry and the natural sciences. The most successful contestants from the school rounds across the region arrived at the faculty together with their teachers to bring this year’s regional round of the competition to a close.
Author: Secondary School of Chemical Engineering and Grammar School Brno The contestants and their teachers spent the morning in the laboratories of the Secondary School of Chemical Engineering and Grammar School Brno. They then moved together with the organizers from the school to our faculty. The highlight of the program here was the ceremonial announcement of the best pupils and teachers who had prepared their students for the competition. Awards were presented not only to the most successful young chemists, but also to their teachers, whose work significantly contributes to fostering interest in chemistry among primary school pupils.

Zdeněk Olšan, Primary School and Kindergarten Kunštát
Marek Světnica, Primary School Hodonín
Monika Holasová, Primary School Letovice
The overall program of the day was designed to be inspiring both for the contestants and their accompanying teachers. The teachers attended a lecture by Silvestr Figalla from the Institute of Materials Chemistry focused on waste management. It introduced current approaches to sustainable material management and possibilities for their chemical processing.

They visited, for example, the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Biomaterials (Iva Buchtíková), the Bioplastics Laboratory (Přemysl Menčík), and the Biocolloids Laboratory (Martin Kadlec), where our scientists introduced them to current research topics as well as practical applications of chemistry in consumer, materials, and food chemistry.
The regional final thus offered participants not only the culmination of their competition efforts, but also an opportunity to gain insight into university study and modern chemical research.
