Science, teaching and lifelong contribution. BUT honored personalities from the Faculty of Chemistry

Scientific achievements, popularization of research, excellent pedagogical work and lifelong contribution to the university. Personalities of the Faculty of Chemistry BUT received numerous awards during the 27th BUT Academic Assembly, which took place on September 17, 2026. The university's Rector, Ladislav Janíček, honored scientific teams and prominent personalities who have long contributed to the development of the faculty and the entire university.

BUT gold and silver medals

Prof. Michal Veselý received the BUT Gold Medal for his outstanding lifelong contribution to the establishment and development of the Faculty of Chemistry. He played a key role in founding the faculty in the 1990s and helped shape its direction for more than three decades. From 2022 to 2025, he served as Dean of the Faculty. He also made significant contributions to the development of its infrastructure, research in photocatalysis and materials printing, and collaboration with industrial partners.

The BUT Silver Medal was awarded in memoriam to Prof. František Krčma, who made an outstanding contribution to the development of plasma physics and chemistry research at the Faculty of Chemistry. He was a respected expert in plasma medicine, coordinated international research projects, and was deeply committed to teaching and educating the next generation of scientists.

Rector's Awards for research achievements

The award for a publication representing an outstanding contribution by a BUT research team to the scientific community was presented to Ing. Stevan Gavranović, Ph.D., and Prof. Martin Vala, who collaborated on the publication with Prof. Ing. Klára Částková, Ph.D., from CEITEC and the BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Their research into advanced semiconductor materials has provided new insights into lead-free halide perovskites. Their findings were published in the scientific journal Advanced Optical Materials and attracted international attention.

The award for a research achievement that received outstanding media attention went to a team consisting of Assoc. Prof. Pavel Diviš, Ing. Jaromír Pořízka, Ph.D., Ing. Zuzana Slavíková, Ph.D., and Ing. Olga Kmentová. They presented their research on protein-rich and functional foods not only to the scientific community but also to the wider public through Czech Radio, Czech Television, and the university podcast Technicky vzato. Their activities helped raise awareness of alternative protein sources and sustainable food production.

Rector's Award for outstanding academic achievement

Lukáš Kletzander also received the BUT Rector's Award for outstanding academic achievement in master's studies. He is a graduate of the Chemistry for Medical Applications study programme, specialising in Chemistry of Bioactive Compounds. He received the award during the Faculty of Chemistry's graduation ceremony.

He completed his studies with an exceptional grade point average of 1.00 and graduated with honours. His master's thesis focused on the characterisation of a microwave plasma jet for therapeutic applications, and he also presented his research findings at international conferences. In addition to his academic and scientific achievements, he was actively involved in science outreach and represented the faculty as a student ambassador.

Two Faculty of Chemistry lecturers among the award winners

The Academic Assembly also included the announcement of the results of the Best BUT Teacher Award, based on student evaluations. Two lecturers from the Faculty of Chemistry received awards:

  • Ing. Lucia Ivanová, Ph.D. in the bachelor's study category.

  • Assoc. Prof. Ing. Zdenka Kozáková, Ph.D. in the follow-up master's study category.

We would like to thank both lecturers for their dedication and their approach to teaching and supporting students.
