International Conferences SPASEC-28, AOTs-29, and PFAS-3 at Faculty of Chemistry BUT
From May 12 to 15, 2025, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Brno University of Technology, hosted three significant international conferences: the 28th SPASEC (Semiconductor Photocatalysis and Solar Energy Conversion), the 29th AOTs (Advanced Oxidation Technologies for Treatment of Water, Air, and Soil), and the 3rd PFAS (Perfluorinated Substances).
The SPASEC-28 conference focused on advanced research in semiconductor photocatalysis and solar energy conversion, including the development of new materials, solar fuels, and biomedical applications. AOTs-29 presented the latest advanced oxidation and reduction technologies for the treatment of water, air, and soil, including methods utilizing UV radiation, plasma technologies, and electrohydraulic discharges. PFAS-3 addressed the issue of perfluorinated substances, their detection, impacts on health and the environment, and possibilities for their removal.
The event attracted experts from academia, research institutions, and industry, who shared the latest findings and discussed challenges and solutions in sustainable development and environmental protection. The Faculty of Chemistry thus reaffirmed its role as a center of excellence in research and development of environmental technologies.
Socially, the conference culminated on Wednesday evening with a gala dinner, during which two prestigious international awards were presented:
-
Professor David Ollis Award in Photocatalysis: Named after Professor David F. Ollis, a pioneer in photocatalysis and environmental engineering, this award recognizes outstanding contributions to semiconductor photocatalysis. This year, the award was shared by Professor Claudio Minero from the University of Turin and Professor Ladislav Kavan from the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague, for their significant contributions to the field.
-
Professor Dion Dionysiou Award in Advanced Oxidation Technologies: Named after Professor Dionysios Dionysiou, a recognized expert in advanced oxidation technologies and environmental engineering, this award honors exceptional achievements in the field of advanced oxidation technologies. This year, the recipients were Professor Parag R. Gogate from the Institute of Chemical Technology (Mumbai, India) and Professor Xie Quan from Dalian University of Technology (Dalian, China) for their outstanding results in this area.
Both awards were established in 2024 by Redox Technologies in honor of the lifelong contributions of these two scientists to environmental technologies. Their legacy continues to inspire the scientific community towards innovation and sustainable solutions in environmental protection.
