Original Abstract

Recent advancements in laser technology have enabled development of Directed Energy (DE) air defense systems motivated by their high precision and low operational cost compared to conventional defense missiles. In this study, the definition of Weapon Target Assignment (WTA) problem tailored for laser air defense systems is presented. The WTA problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem and can be solved by many techniques such as evolutionary optimization algorithms. The presented WTA problem is solved by a Cross-Entropy (CE) method in number of realistic air defense scenarios assuming large scale salvo attacks against protected areas. The results have shown that CE is able to simultaneously optimize the assignment of incoming targets to laser stations, the fire order and locations of the defense laser stations (effectors).
