Original Abstract

Passive sampling devices gain more and more popularity in the field of environmental sampling of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These devices are much cheaper in comparison with traditional active sampling methods; besides, they are simpler to operate, they don't need electricity, and the laboratory treatment of exposed devices is usually also simpler and more straightforward. Many types of passive samplers have been developed and applied for the sampling of POPs in the environment. Among them, Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) - layflat polyethylene tubes filled with triolein - are unique in their ability to uptake both vapour phase air pollutants and the compounds present in particulate phase. This is due to the sticky lipid layer, which is formed on the outer surface of the polyethylene membrane at the beginning of device exposition in air by penetration of lower molecular weight impurities from sequestered triolein (mainly oleic acid and its monoester) to the outer polyethylene surface. We tried to evaluate the role of the surface lipid layer in the mechanism of polyaromates uptake from air. For this purpose we set up a mathematical model treating the surface lipid layer, polyethylene membrane and enclosed triolein as separate compartments and after evaluation of all transport processes in this system we tried to simulate the uptake of PAHs from air. We found that the surface lipid layer doesn't respond in integrative manner, whilst the response of other two compartments is integrative. Therefore, the surface lipid layer should be removed before laboratory treatment of the exposed SPMDs.
