Original Abstract

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a white solid linear extracellular polysaccharide with a high-order fibrous structure and unique physical and chemical properties. It was found that the bacteria from the genera Komagataeibacter are excellent producers of BC. The applications of BC have been explored in many areas, such as the food industry, pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology, cosmetics, electronics, and textile industry. However, its mass production for industrial applications is not optimal. Several cultivation methods, including bacterial strain selection, nutrient selection, and optimization of cultivation conditions, have been recently investigated to enhance BC production. This work shows that the production and application of BC may contribute to the circular economy if its production is planned based on the use of local food and agricultural intermediates and waste. One such example is the waste from the wine industry, which is rich in residual sugars suitable for the cultivation of bacteria-producing BC. This study demonstrates various modifications to prepare potential bioadsorbents based on BC. The presented work was supported through the internal Brno University of Technology project FCH-S-22-7961.
