Introduction, functional requirements and terminology of roofs. Pitched and flat roof definitions and principles. Types of roof structures.
Structural principles of sloping roofs. Collar and classic timber roof structures, trussed rafter types of timber structures. Truss roof structures.
Roofing and covering of sloping roofs. Bow and sloping roof windows.
Flat roofs, principles for design, single (warm) and double (could) roof systems. Falls and drainage systems. Thermal design. Inverted and hybrid roofs. Roofing for flat roofs, bitumen and plastic sheets.
Roof windows and skylights, sun shading and stoplights. Transparent roof constructions.
Energy conscious design of roof constructions for low energy buildings and passive solar houses.
Green roofs and roof gardens.

Course curriculum
2. Types of roof structures. Truss and girder roofs, north light and monitor roofs, rigid frame and beam constructions, shell structures, folded slabs, suspension roof grid structures, cable network and tension membrane structures, air stabilized and air supported structures.
3. Structural principles of pitched roofs, bracing systems. Collar and classic timber roof structures, trussed rafter types of timber structures.
4. Truss roof structures. Standardization of manufactures timber girder and spatial truss roof structures. Bracing systems.
5. Roofing and covering of sloping roofs. Functional requirements and resistance to weather, roofing types and materials, fixing and finishing of roof coverings. Eaves and ridge ventilation systems and components.
6. Bow, arc and sloping roof windows. Functional requirements, constructional principles.
7. Flat roofs. Principles of warm and cold roofs. Typical drainage layouts and design of falls.
8. Constructions of flat roofs. Thermal design, moisture problems
and ventilation systems.
9. Roofing of flat roofs. Roof cladding, sheetmetal and corrugated roofing. Smooth-surfaced roofing. Bitumen sheets and built-up roofing. Application techniques, surface protection, typical specifications. Rubber sheets and roof plastic folies. Inverted roofs.
10. Skylights and transparent roof construction for daylighting. Principles of design and constructional variants.
11. Thermal and energy-conscious design of roof constructions for low energy houses. Principles of solar and bioclimatic design for site climatic conditions.
12. Green roofs and roof gardens.
13. Special requirements and principles of design for roofing of large-span roof structures.
