Come and experience the richness of chemistry at the Researchers’ Night

On Friday, 26 September 2025, starting at 5:00 p.m., the Faculty of Chemistry at Brno University of Technology will open its doors as part of the nationwide Researchers’ Night event, this year on the theme of Richness. You can look forward to a packed program at our stands, an adventurous treasure hunt for children, the popular chemistry show, and much more!

PROGRAMME

5:00 – 10:00 p.m. The chemical code of richness – adventure game for children

Embark on an adventurous journey through the Faculty of Chemistry! Complete simple tasks, collect secret codes, and put together a hidden pattern. Those who manage to solve it will receive a small treasure.

6:00, 7:00, 8:00 p.m. Chemistry show
Come and enjoy our legendary chemistry science show – and don’t forget: If we start running, you’d better run too!

5:00 – 10:00 p.m. Programme at the stands:

Organic chemistry – the molecular richness around us

Enter the world where the incredible richness of molecules is hidden! Organic molecules from nature and synthetic ones alike have diverse structures. This diversity gives rise to different properties that find applications in fields such as pharmacy, food industry, materials technology, or organic electronics. Come and discover how this richness is manifested – in visually fascinating experiments where the colours of solutions change as the structures of molecules transform – and join our molecular puzzle.

Materials – the hidden richness of the world

Richness no longer means only gold or money. The real treasure of today is, for example, chips – the invisible heroes of modern technology. They are found in mobile phones, cars, and smart appliances. Without them, our world would stop working. Hundreds of them operate in a single car. Come and find out what materials and technologies chips are made of. In the lab, you will use a microscope to explore their nano-architecture and discover why chips belong to the greatest richness of today. And because richness comes in many forms, you can also mint your own coin as a souvenir to take home.

Plasma = a rich source for our greatest wealth – health

Plasma is an energy-charged form of matter, rich in visible and invisible reactive particles that can be effectively used (not only) to save and maintain our health – which is without doubt our greatest wealth. Visit the Laboratory of Plasma Processes and experience the richness of this magical source with all your senses: you will see, hear, smell, touch, and even feel tempted to try plasma on your own skin.

The richness of our planet

The most precious things are not only gold or diamonds, but also what surrounds us. Our planet hides richness we often do not see: in soil, water, minerals, and even in our own blood. With forensic, analytical, and environmental chemistry we can uncover secrets and read hidden stories. Forensic chemistry can decipher invisible traces we leave behind. Analytical chemistry can reveal the treasures hidden in a single drop or a grain of soil. And environmental chemistry teaches us how to protect this richness so it will not be lost. Discover with us that true richness lies in ordinary things and that real treasures are within everyone’s reach.

The richness of water – what is the real price of water?

Water is true wealth – and there is more behind it than meets the eye. In our Environmental Technology Laboratory you can look forward to an interactive “story game” and quiz, where you will uncover the water footprint of everyday objects and foods: from a desk and a phone to a kilo of potatoes or beef. Together we will ask controversial questions: Why do we pay for water supply and sewage? Is water in the Czech Republic expensive, or should the price actually be higher to keep it available and of good quality? The programme also includes a demonstration of technologies for water reuse. You will learn how membrane separation – specifically ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis – works and why these processes remove waste substances from water, making its safe reuse possible. Come and play, guess, and discuss. Discover how much hidden water we carry in our pockets and on our plates and why it is wise to treat this richness with respect. What you will experience: a short story game, quiz, and demonstration of membrane technologies Topics: water footprint of products and foods, water supply and sewage price in the Czech Republic, water reuse Why come: you will understand where and why water “disappears” – and how to return it back into circulation.

From waste to treasure: Recycling – the richness of the future

Find out why recycling plastics is the key to a richer future. Children can try sorting materials using magnets and flotation, while adults will learn why some packaging – such as Tetra Pak – is a challenge for recycling. Come and discover value where others see none!

A clean environment free of pathogens as an important contribution to health – our greatest wealth

In the Laboratory of Photochemistry we have long been dedicated to the design, study, and preparation of light-activated materials which, after irradiation, act biocidally – suppressing pathogenic microorganisms where they pose a risk. At our stand, a representative of our industrial partner will present our recent success – a light-activated self-disinfecting foil designed for touch surfaces. If you are more deeply interested, you can learn more during a tour of our laboratory, including practical demonstrations of light-activated biocidal systems and testing of antimicrobial efficiency.

The richness of colloid chemistry

Come and discover the richness hidden in colloid chemistry! You may be surprised where colloids appear – both in nature and in your home. You will make your own slime and take part in a fascinating experiment where we transform copper into “gold.” Under UV light, you will also reveal hidden secrets of banknotes and learn what richness is hidden in soil.

Our greatest richness is health

When people meet, they usually wish each other “good health above all.” One of the most important treasures for health is diet. Nowadays, probiotics are often recommended, as they influence the whole body and even the mind. Mix your own healthy fruit or vegetable drink with probiotic bacteria, which you will observe and count under the microscope, and at the same time measure the content of other beneficial substances in the drinks using a simple experiment. You will take home your own little richness in a cup...

Invisible richness – the treasure of microorganisms

Microorganisms may be small, but they can do big things! Come and discover the richness they bring us – from transforming waste into useful substances to producing foods we enjoy. Try puzzles and matching games, find out where bacteria hide, and learn what they can create.

The most precious richness: health at the molecular level

For each of us, the greatest richness is health, which has its roots in the fundamental biological processes within cells. That is why we invite you to discover the secrets of health at the very molecular level. At our stand, you can look forward to demonstrations of instruments and methods used to study nucleic acids and proteins – the building blocks of life that control the body’s functions and protect us against harmful influences. You will also enjoy fun activities to refresh your knowledge of metabolism, antibodies, and key processes such as replication, transcription, and translation.
