Foreign mission in Turkey strengthened academic cooperation

Petr Dzik, the vice-dean for international cooperation of FCH BUT, travelled to Turkey at the beginning of May as part of a diplomatic mission aimed at developing cooperation in the field of the environment. The trip was organized by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations, especially in the spheres of water, climate, circular economy and waste management. A key focus was to promote cooperation not only at government level but also between academic institutions.

During the trip, vice-dean Dzik together with his colleague Filip Faltejšek from VŠCHT visited the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. Here they presented the possibilities of Erasmus+ programmes and discussed scientific cooperation with faculties focused on chemistry and chemical engineering.

“I chose the university because it has all teaching and communication in English, it is slightly higher in the rankings than BUT and the structure of the faculties is similar to BUT. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Rector’s Department of Internationalization, internationalization coordinators from the Department of Chemistry from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, students were also present,” said the vice-dean.

As a result of the meeting, preliminary Erasmus+ agreements were agreed with several faculties and departments of METU. “We noted a large overlap in the structure of study programmes and the interest of both parties to conclude an Erasmus Agreement. Furthermore, I personally visited the Department of Chemistry and we discussed the possibility of scientific cooperation. I introduced our research groups and we discussed opportunities for the mobility of PhD students,” added Petr Dzik.

During the discussion on the return flight, participation in the internship program at the Ministry of the Environment was arranged with the minister and his team.

The mission to Turkey has brought a number of positive results and opened up new opportunities for bilateral cooperation. The establishment of contacts with Turkish scientific institutions and the Erasmus+ cooperation agreements are an important step towards expanding academic links and exchanging experiences in the fields of environment, chemistry and chemical engineering.
