Scientists from Brno University of Technology turn science into adventure at Pop Science festival

A weekend full of science, discoveries, and fun is coming to VIDA! Science Center in Brno with Pop Science. The festival, taking place from November 7–9, will offer a program for both schools and the public and will show that science is not boring. Experts from Brno University of Technology will also take part, introducing the world of computer science, chemistry, and laboratory medicine.

The three-day program full of science shows and interactive workshops is a perfect opportunity to see science “in action” and discover how it works through various experiments. “We want to make science understandable and entertaining for all generations. Pop Science shows that even complex principles can be fascinating and inspires both children and adults to explore, which is exactly our goal,” said Lenka Svobodová, coordinator of the event for BUT.

The festival will kick off on Friday with a program for elementary school pupils, during which scientists from Brno University of Technology will demonstrate how chemistry can smell like caramel, how slime helps heal wounds, or how supercomputers assist in brain surgeries. During the weekend, families with children will then visit the science center. They can look forward to more than fifty performances and hundreds of experiments, including making slime with university chemists or enjoying the popular Chemistry Show full of explosions.

BUT program:

  • Chemistry is where you least expect it! Even in the kitchen – November 7 at 9:00 and 10:00, November 9 at 12:15, Multifunctional Hall

Tomáš Opravil from the Faculty of Chemistry at BUT will reveal the world of chemistry and chemical reactions. During the Chemistry Show, he will demonstrate several impressive, simple, and safe experiments that you can try at home. However, there will also be those you definitely shouldn’t try at home. You can look forward to a volcano, snakes, Bengal fire, a furious grizzly, and caramel bubbles.

  • Gel Magic: How Slime and Bubbles Are Saving the World – November 7 at 11:15, Multifunctional Hall

Scientists Marian Sedlář and Gabriela Konečná from the CEITEC BUT research center will explain why slime and gel beads are important for medicine. They act as wound healers and invisible drug carriers – and even though they may look like toys, they play a very important role in both science and medicine.

  • How Supercomputers Help Operate on the Brain – November 7 at 11:30, Science Theater

Jiří Jaroš from the Faculty of Information Technology at BUT will present how supercomputers work to help doctors save lives. They are mainly used in brain treatment through ultrasound because they can simulate medical processes, allowing doctors to plan safe and effective procedures. It’s not just about calculations – it’s also about precise data transfer and patient monitoring.

In addition to experts from Brno University of Technology, the event will also feature scientists and performers from other universities and research organizations, who have created a unique weekend program for visitors.
