Student FCH Kateřina Mašková won the Audience Award in the FameLab finals
On the last Monday of September, the Municipal Library in Prague hosted the final evening of FameLab, a prestigious competition promoting science through stand-up. Twelve finalists from Czech universities and research institutions had three minutes each to bring their scientific topic closer to the public. Among them shone Bc. Kateřina Mašková, a student of the Chemistry for Medical Applications program at the Faculty of Chemistry, BUT, who won the Audience Award for her performance “Plasma Strikes Back!”. Congratulations!
Author: Famelab “When I signed up for FameLab, I thought: *Let’s just give it a try.* I had no idea I was about to embark on a journey that would move me forward so much. Even the Masterclass itself was incredibly enriching – not just in terms of knowledge, but mainly because of the people. We all grew close, as we were connected by the same passion – to inspire others with science,” Kateřina describes her impressions. Author: Famelab “The finals were an experience I will never forget. To stand on stage in front of so many people who came just to listen to us, young scientists – that gives you unbelievable energy. It was the moment I realized the true power of science communication. And then the jury. They were very kind and incredibly inspiring. It was a huge honor for me that people with such capacity and experience dedicated their time to me – a small chemist who came to talk about plasma,” she adds. Author: Famelab “And the cherry on top – the Audience Award. I never would have believed I could win something like this, and that’s exactly why I value it so much. It was a huge motivation for me and proof that even a newcomer can reach the audience when you put a piece of yourself into it. It was a wonderful experience. And if you ever get the chance to try FameLab – don’t hesitate. It will enrich you far more than you can imagine right now. Author: Famelab Finally, I would like to say thank you – to my friends and family for their support, to everyone involved in FameLab for the amazing way they organize it, to my PlasMed team, to the Faculty of Chemistry, because school support is never a given, to Drmísko (I think he’s already an expert on *THAT PLASMA*), and to all of you who followed how far little pig Květoš 🐷 and plasma could go.”
Congratulations, Katka! Thank you for representing FCH so wonderfully, for your passion for science, and for your courage to stand on stage. We look forward to seeing where the world of science takes you next!
FameLab is an international competition launched in 2004 in the UK as part of the Cheltenham Festivals. Its aim is to find new talents in science communication who can present their topic in an entertaining, clear, and enthusiastic way. Contestants have only three minutes to explain their scientific theme without using audiovisual technology. The only props allowed are those they can carry on and off the stage themselves. The competition was brought to the Czech Republic in 2011 by the British Council, and since 2022 it has been organized by Charles University.
