Original Abstract

In order to achieve a low water/binder ratio of RPC (reactive powder concrete), superplasticizers (SP) are added, which make it possible to reduce the content of mixing water while maintaining suitable workability. However, by using SP workability cannot be increased indefinitely, as the use of a higher amount of SP than its corresponding optimal dose leads to reduced workability. Therefore, the ideal solution would be to find other substances that - together with SP - would lead to a further increase in the workability of RPC. The subject of this work is the study of the influence of potassium formate (PF), potassium propionate (PP) and their combination with calcium formate (CF) on the flow of RPC. This paper also deals with their effect on RPC hydration and focuses of whether these additives do negatively affect the mechanical properties of RPC. Two sets of RPC samples were prepared to measure flow, compressive strength, and flexural strength. In the 1st set, 3.97 wt. % of PF (by weight of the cement) was added to the described mixture. Furthermore, RPC samples were prepared in which the content of PF gradually decreased at the expense of which CF was added, until 50% of PF was replaced by CF. In the 2nd set, 5.30 wt. % of PP was added to the described mixture. In the same way as in the previous series, samples were prepared in which PP was replaced by CF up to a replacement of 50%. A reference without the addition of these substances and a specimen containing only CF (3.97 wt. %) were also prepared. For isothermal calorimetry, steel fibers were omitted but the other then that, their composition reminded same. The obtained data show that PF and PP in combination with CF lead to an increase in the workability of RPC, but it is necessary to add these additives in an appropriate ratio, since the addition of a larger amount of CF has a negative effect on workability.
