Original Abstract
The evolution of accidents in the Czech Republic and in foreign countries demonstrates, that there is a need to improve the complicated problem of protecting the individual, their property and the environment in a complex manner. Advanced countries (such as the Nordic countries and Switzerland) have made a concerted effort to decrease the number of tragic losses and are quite advanced with their safety programs regarding safety of transport, with the numbers of deaths and injuries showing a marked decrease. Transport of dangerous goods seems to have a low impact compared to the total social loss. However, the escape of dangerous goods into the environment during accidents can have tragically unexpected consequences. Vehicles specified for transport of dangerous goods in the Czech Republic periodically undergo technical controls. The total number of accidents regarding transport of dangerous goods that are due to technical defect are very low. Most dangerous goods in the Czech Republic are transported by road and this kind of transport conforms to the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, commonly known as ADR.
