Original Abstract

A specific kind of waste biomass is rapeseed cake, formed in the manufacturing process of rapeseed oil and production of biodiesel. This cake is mainly composed of cellulose 17.35 %, hemicelluloses 31.26 % and lignin 1.13 %. The polysaccharides, cellulose and hemicelluloses are suitable source of sugar monomers after acid or enzymatic hydrolysis, which can be then fermented to ethanol by suitable yeasts. For this purpose, two strains of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. bayanus, with high ethanol productivity were obtained from the Czech National Collection of Type Cultures (CNCTC) and have been used for fermentation. As the main problem during the rapeseed acid hydrolysate fermentation, occurred the formation of inhibitory substances. Therefore also a SSF process has been applied. In this case an enzyme cocktail obtained from cultivation of specific mould on spent coffee ground have been used. The concentration of ethanol was determined by HPLC/RI and stopped at 11.56 g/l, after 48 h of cultivation.
