Original Abstract

This book deals with possibility of production of the materials that can be used as an alternative to traditional petrochemical plastics. First of all, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are polyesters which are produced and accumulated by a wide variety of bacterial strains. Mechanical properties of PHA are similar to those of polypropylene (PP), nevertheless, unlike PP, PHA are fully biodegradable and biocompatible. Therefore, major part of this book is dedicated to them. Further, biodegradation of materials is natural process of material decomposition by microorganisms. The second part of this book is aimed at biodegradation of polyurethanes.
