Legislation in Chemistry

Legislation on the handling of chemical substances (Act 356/2003 Coll., On chemical substances and chemical mixtures, Act 258/2000 Coll., On public health protection, including accompanying decrees and regulations). Warning symbols, H-phrases, P-phrases. Safety sheets, their use for working with chemicals. Packaging and labeling of chemicals. Handling of chemical wastes. The basics of first pre-medical help. Guidance on the handling of chemical substances at FCH BUT in Brno.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 1 teaching hour per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A test after which the student gets a credit. To obtain a credit it is necessary to get at least 13 out of 15 points.

Course curriculum

The course is divided into seven thematic units listed below. Students are introduced to the introductory lecture, the subject is taught in the form of a controlled study, students are provided with a full elearning course, introducing students to valid legislation and work safety in the following areas:
1.Legislation in the field of handling chemical substances (Law 356/2003, Coll. of Law, dealing with Handling chemical substances and preparations; Law 258/2000, Coll. of Law, dealing with Protection of Public Health) and other public notices.
2. Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council
3. Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council
4. Safety sheets, their exploitation for handling chemical substances
5. Handling chemical wastes
6. Principles of first aid
7. Instructions for handling chemicals at the Faculty of Chemistry, Brno University of Technology

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic information that is generally related to the treatment of chemical substances (legislation, first aid, safety data sheets) in the form of a lecture, to familiarize students with the rules that were approved by the KHS Brno for treatment of chemical substances at the FCH BUT and to teach students the system of work with chemicals.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Mandatory attendance at the lecture and successful passing of the test.
