Invitation to a lecture: Energy of Light for a Sustainable Future
On Thursday, 16 October 2025 at 10:30 a.m. in lecture hall P17 at the Faculty of Chemistry BUT, a public lecture will be held by a specialist from the Technical University of Vienna. Dr. Alexey Cherevan will present modern approaches to converting sunlight into clean energy and thus contributing to a more sustainable future.
When: 16 October 2025, 10:30 a.m.Where: Lecture Hall P17, Faculty of Chemistry, Brno University of Technology
Speaker: Assistant Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Alexey Cherevan, Vienna University of Technology
Speaker profile
Abstract:
The global demand for energy continues to rise while the consequences of fossil fuel consumption (climate change, pollution, and resource depletion) pose an urgent challenge to humanity. Among the many possible solutions, sunlight stands out as an abundant, clean, and renewable source of energy. In this lecture, we will explore how light can be harnessed to power a sustainable future. We will first discuss the nature and energy of sunlight and its interaction with matter, providing the scientific foundation for solar energy conversion using functional inorganic materials. Building on this, we will examine how sunlight can be transformed into useful forms of energy through two key technologies: photovoltaics, which directly convert light into electricity, and photocatalysis, which drives chemical reactions such as water splitting and CO2 reduction to produce solar fuels.
