VUT Junior at the Faculty of Chemistry: a Saturday full of science and discovery

On Saturday, March 15, the Faculty of Chemistry came alive with the enthusiasm of young researchers! As part of the VUT Junior programme, students and their parents immersed themselves in the world of science and technology through interactive workshops. They experienced firsthand what it’s like to be chemists and discovered fascinating processes shaping our environment and modern technologies.

Water: the fundamental building block of all organisms

In the first workshop, students explored the secrets of chemical water analysis. They learned that water is not just the basic component of all organisms, but also an environment influencing the lives of many species. Using chemical tests, participants could personally determine whether water was clean and safe. Those who brought their own water samples (0.5 liters were sufficient) could test them on-site and obtain specific information about their composition.

Plastic adventure: from powder to 3D product

The second workshop focused on plastics and their production. Students embarked on an adventurous journey from plastic granules to 3D printing. They experienced how plastic transforms into filament suitable for 3D printing and had the opportunity to design and print their own models. A video featuring Mr. Jablíčko.

Fun not only for students – parents enjoyed the experience too!

The event was not just about student experiences – parents also had the chance to delve into the world of science and discovery. The Institute of Food Science and Biotechnology prepared a special program combining science with gourmet experiences. Adults could explore the secrets of the faculty brewery and learn about beer brewing – from ingredient selection to fermentation. Another highlight was a captivating lecture on coffee roasting and preparation, providing theoretical insights along with the chance to taste different coffee varieties and understand their distinctions.

Thank you to everyone who participated – we look forward to the next year’s event!
