Invitation to lecture by Iso Christl

The Biocolloid Laboratory invites you to a lecture by Dr. Iso Christl from ETH Zurich on Arsenic - a ubiquitous constituent of soils: How its biogeochemical behaviour impacts on human health. The lecture will take place on Wednesday 13 December 2023 at 10:00 in room P4.

Annotation:
Arsenic is a ubiquitous element in terrestrial systems. Its concentrations range over a very wide range, from background levels of a few ppm to very elevated levels in naturally enriched environments and contaminated sites. Starting with the discovery of elevated arsenic concentrations in groundwater in Bangladesh in the early 1990s, arsenic biogeochemistry has become a major focus of environmental research. This presentation highlights key features of the biogeochemical behaviour of this versatile element. The importance of these findings is demonstrated by presenting current research on the impact of arsenic biogeochemical behaviour on its uptake by rice, the staple food of half of the world's population.
