On the project

The increasing global energy demand calls for sustainable solutions, with hydrogen as a promising clean fuel. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a crucial role in green hydrogen production, often studied in homogeneous molecular systems for detailed mechanistic insights. Flavins, organic dyes inspired by vitamin B2, offer a tuneable alternative to existing photosensitizers. This project, a collaboration between FCH BUT and TUW, aims to synthesize novel flavins and optimize their photocatalytic activity. Key challenges include extending absorption across the visible spectrum and reducing platinum dependency through non-noble metal co- catalysts for improved stability and sustainability.
