Successful representation on the international stage: visit to South Korea

At the end of November 2024, Prof. Krajčovič and Dr. Ivanová from the Faculty of Chemistry, Brno University of Technology, participated in Czech-Korean seminars held at leading South Korean universities. Their visit highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the development of scientific ties between the Czech Republic and South Korea.

Their first stop was Inha University in Incheon (Seoul), hosting the Inha International (Korea-Czech Joint) Seminar 2024, organized by Prof. Bong Sup Shim. Prof. Shim previously visited the Faculty of Chemistry in 2023 (more here) and again in 2024, participating in the 2nd Autumn Workshop on Functional Organic Materials for Sustainable Future and delivering a talk at the 9th Meeting on Chemistry and Life.

These visits were crucial for establishing closer collaboration and strengthening international friendships. At the seminar, Prof. Krajčovič gave an invited lecture titled “The influence of bulky substituents on the intrinsic properties of organic optoelectronic materials via side chain engineering”, while Dr. Ivanová presented her research on “Riboflavin-inspired materials: metal-free photosensitisers for artificial photosynthesis“.

Their second stop was Hannam University in Daejeon, where Prof. Dong Ryeol Whang is based. After touring modern laboratory facilities on the Daedeok Valley Campus, Prof. Krajčovič delivered an invited lecture titled “Molecular tuning: the way for improving the application potential of organic demiconductors“. Prof. Whang is a long-standing scientific partner of Prof. Krajčovič’s research group. Their collaboration began during research activities in Linz at the institute led by Prof. N. S. Sariciftci (LIOS, JKU) and resulted in significant outcomes, including joint publications and a patent in the field of photocatalysis.

This visit to South Korea not only strengthened existing partnerships but also opened up new possibilities for exchanging experiences, preparing joint project proposals, and establishing consortia for international research activities. Additionally, discussions were held regarding exchange opportunities for students and outstanding young scientists, further contributing to the growth of international collaboration and connections between academic communities. The Faculty of Chemistry reaffirmed its position among internationally recognized research institutions, significantly expanding its global scientific network.
