Instrumental and structure analysis

Fundamentals, instrumentation and usage of methods of chemical, physical and structure analysis. Separation methods: chromatography methods-gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography; electrophoresis, isotachophoresis. Ion mobility spectrometry. Field-flow fractionation. Thermal analysis: thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Mass spectrometry organic and inorganic. Infrared and Raman spectrometry. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Electron spin resonance spectrometry. Moessbauer spectrometry. Hyphenated techniques.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completion of this course will increase students' competence in the following way:
a) Students will know the principles of instrumental analytical methods used in routine analytical practice
b) Students will master the methods of interpretation of the obtained measurement results both in qualitative and in quantitative terms
c) Students will be able to creatively optimize the selection of analytical techniques in solving specific analytical problem

Prerequisites

Basic knowladge of physics, general chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic, organic, analytical chemistry and biochemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Oral examination within the range of discussed topics. Assessed is the knowledge of the principles of analytical methods including their specifics and creative ability of solution of given analytical problem.

Aims

The aim of this course is:
- to familiarize students with selected instrumental analytical methods used in the analytical practice
- to give them a thorough overview of the basic characteristics of these methods
- to teach students how to choose the optimal instrumental method for the concrete analytical problem
