Course detail

Organic Chemistry II

FCH-BC_OCH2Acad. year: 2024/2025

The subject provides knowledge of basic organic chemistry from the point of view of the mechanism of organic reactions, basic physico-chemical properties of selected types of organic compounds, and the student will learn the basic pillars of organic chemistry and organic synthesis. The subject is divided into several chapters.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of the Organic Chemistry I.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Completing the tutorial of Organic Chemistry, which is accompanying the lectures, requires passing 4 written tests. Those who receive a average of 50% of points earn a credit automatically. Alternatively, students are obliged to pass another test at the end of term with gain at least 50%.
The examination consists from written test and oral examination. In the written part knowledge from Organic Chemistry II is tested, in oral exam then knowledge from the whole Organic chemistry.

Completing the tutorial of Organic chemistry requires the attendance and successfully passed all class exams.
The examination consists from written test and an oral examination.

Aims

The aim of the course is acquiring deeper knowledge of organic compounds reactivity. The course is connected with the previous course Organic Chemistry I, which represents necessary prerequisite for understanding the subject matter of this course. The aim of the course is understanding the structure and reactivity of various functional groups bound at various carbon skeletons, influence of the skeleton upon reactivity of the group and the opposite inluence of the group upon reactivity of skeleton.
Completing the course of Organic Chemistry II in connection with course Organic Chemistry I, students acquire the complex knowledge of structure, reactivity and stereochemistry of hydrocarbon derivatives and heterocyclic compounds. Student will be able on a basic level solved synthetic approaches and recognize relevance of organic reactions. The acquired knowledge allows a wide range of application, both in research and in the practice of organic chemistry, in control laboratories and in state administration authorities.

Syllabus

Předmět poskytuje znalost základní organické chemie z pohledu mechanismu organických reakci, základních fyzikálně-chemických vlastností vybraných typů organických sloučenin a student se naučí základním pilířům organické chemie a organické syntézy. Předmět je členěn do několika kapitol:

1) Halogenderiváty organických sloučenin, nukleofilní substituce na nasyceném uhlíkovém atomu a eliminační reakce.
2) Alkoholy, fenoly, polyhydroxysloučeniny a jejich oxidace. Ethery, peroxidy, epoxidy. Thioly, sulfidy, sulfonové kyseliny a jejich deriváty.
3) Aminy, jejich diazotace, vznik arendiazoniových solí a jejich využití. Diazosloučeniny. Azidy. Nitrosloučeniny.
4) Organokovové sloučeniny.
5) Karbonylové sloučeniny - aldehydy a ketony, nukleofilní adice na C=O skupinu, aldolizační reakce aldehydů a ketonů.
