Molecular Energy Harvesting Materials: Towards Breaking the Limits

The main scientific goal of the project is to significantly broaden materials basis that exhibit singlet fission (SF) and as such can be used in solar cells breaking the Shockley-Queisser limit. We will focus on development of new chromophores that are air-stable, highly absorptive, solution processable and potentially inexpensive and thus can provide suitable chromophore for harvesting high-energy photons for solar cells exceeding efficiencies set by the limit for single-threshold device. The strategy will be based on development of new dyes and pigments exhibiting singlet fission via careful tuning of the chromophore energetics and intermolecular electron coupling. Our preliminary data show, that such modifications can be done for several stable pigments.
