The leuco dye TPs were successfully dispersed into one-component heat crosslinkable aliphatic isocyanate lead-ing to the very uniform color of the coating depositedonto polyester fabric with floating knife technology. The colourization and decolourization effect of ther-mochromic coating was investigated and the resultswere compared to thermal properties of the pigment. The photostability of the thermochromic coating wasfound not to be sufficient enough to be used outdoors. Therefore, an attempt to improve the color stabilitytoward the sunlight was made, by incorporating UV andHALS stabilizers. It is concluded that the UV absorber isa useful lightfastness enhancer for improving the perfor-mance of melamine microencapsulated leuco dye-basedTPs, since it protects the chromophore by absorbing UVlight and needs no direct access to colorant or interme-diate species produced during chromophore degradationunlike HALS, which showed no improvement. Furtherimprovement in photostability of the thermochromiccoating was achieved by increasing the number of layerswith UVA stabilizers over the original thermochromiclayer.
