This study investigated wild-type Aneurinibacillus spp. as natural producers of diverse and functionally rich PHA copolymers without any genetic engineering. When grown on glucose with various lactones and diols, the strains incorporated an unusually wide range of monomers, demonstrating high substrate flexibility of their native PHA synthases. Using α-methyl-γ-butyrolactone, the researchers produced a rare α-branched PHA copolymer, confirmed by GC and NMR analyses. The study also leveraged the intrinsic alcoholytic activity of class IV PHA synthases to introduce alkyne end-groups, enabling click-chemistry functionalization. Material characterization showed that the resulting copolymers had altered thermal behavior, lower crystallinity, and improved elasticity compared to standard poly(3-hydroxybutyrate).
