The incidence of cancer is rising annually, but thanks to the development of new cancer treatments, the prognosis for patients is improving. Nevertheless, for certain forms of cancer, chemotherapy remains a primary treatment approach. However, it is important to note that this medication is not selective and consequently can result in numerous undesirable side effects. Astrategy that has been employed to achieve targeted cancer treatment is the usage of drug carriers. One type of potential carrier is exosomes. Exosomes are membrane-bound vesicles measuring tens of nanometres in diameter. The typical range of measurements for this size is reported to be between 30 and 160 nm. These vesicles are secreted by various types of cells, including cancer cells, and represent a form of cell-to-cell communication. It has been proven that, through a suitable cultivation process, it is possible to obtain a population of exosomes that contain the drug. These exosome-based delivery systems could then be utilised to target cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Nevertheless, this approach is still in its early stages of development. However, the method used to isolate exosomes from the medium of the treated parental cells are factors that can influence the cargo. A possible approach to monitoring these changes is to use the single-particle ICP-MS via analysing theelemental composition of individual exosomes. The present work is focused on the development of SP-ICP-MS methodology for the monitoring of the cargo and size of the exosome, with aparticular emphasis on the content of the drug. This research is a continuation of previous studies on the morphology and size of exosome using TEM.
