The fragmentation pathways of selected boron cluster compounds were elucidated using electrospray as a soft ionization technique in conjunction with the 3-D in trap tandem mass spectrometry. A series of model compounds of carborane type ranging from simple carboranes to complex multi-cage multi-substituted structures was analysed with the aim of finding the fragmentation rules similar to those valid for carbon based compounds.
