Originální abstrakt
The effect of a novel hydrophobic modification of hyaluronan (HA) on its solution properties is presented. The modification was carried out by a chemical binding of alkyl chains (C8 and C12) to the HA backbone via its hydroxyl groups, so that the carboxyl groups remained free, which is crucial for HA applications. Surface tension, rheological and viscosity properties of modified HA (HMHA) were studied. The presented HMHA decreased surface tension, , of their solutions and exhibited an aggregation behavior similar to that of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). High-molecular weight HMHA of higher degree of substitution (DS) displayed more effective surface activity and shear-thinning behavior than the solutions of low-molecular weight HMHA. The coefficient of the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada plot was very similar for both native and HMHA, supposing that the stiffness of the HA backbone was not remarkably altered by the modification.
